The tournament was the sequel to last year’s Beckenbauer Cup, an indoor tournament established to honor the late Franz Beckenbauer. Bayern had won the inaugural tournament, and were hoping to build on that success. There were also a couple of notable newcomers, namely treble winner Mario Mandžukić and German world champion Jürgen Klinsmann. Bayern kicked off the tournament in a rather rusty fashion, as they found themselves trailing 3-1 to Juventus in their opening game.
