(WPRI) — It’s been 13 years since Michael King last threw a pitch at Pepin Field, but on Monday, his baseball career brought him back to his home state. Bishop Hendricken honored the San Diego Padres pitcher and 2013 grad Monday, retiring the number 14 jersey he wore during a ceremony inside Pepin Gymnasium. AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“I think that being able to have this honor was something that when you’re walking through [Pepin Gymnasium] in your year, King said. You’re seeing those jerseys up there and wanting it to be you someday.”Students, family and former teammates were among those who were in attendance for the ceremony.“I know Rhode Island’s a little state, but to be able to say that you’re a state champion a couple of years is cool to almost brag to my counterparts right now,” King said.
