Saying that the act sets an "extremely poor precedent", the BJP MP further mentioned in his complaint: "Therefore, earnestly request you to take immediate cognisance of this serious breach of rules and law; direct an inquiry into the incident through the appropriate committee or mechanism of the House."After Thakur urged Birla to initiate "appropriate disciplinary proceedings against the member concerned" as per the rules of the House, Birla said he would take action if a written complaint was lodged against the TMC MP. Only days ago, Union Ministers Gajendra Shekhawat and Giriraj Singh confronted another TMC MP, Saugata Roy, who was spotted smoking outside the Parliament, citing public health concerns. In response, Roy said the government should instead focus on reducing pollution, adding that he was smoking in the open and not inside the building.
