The quake, recorded at 2041 GMT, hit a sparsely populated area but was strong enough to be felt across a wide radius. The US Geological Survey reported more than 30 aftershocks in the three hours that followed, ranging from magnitude 5.1 to 3.3. The epicentre was located roughly 155 miles (248 kilometres) west of Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon, and about 230 miles northwest of Juneau, the capital of Alaska.
