Reuters FileKenneth Howery, New US ambassador to Denmark and co-founder of PayPal, is visiting Nuuk this week for his first trip to the Arctic territory, where he will meet with officials from both Greenland and Denmark. His visit comes amid heightened tensions following President Donald Trump’s renewed expression of interest in purchasing the semi-autonomous island. The longstanding relationship between Denmark and the United States has been strained since Trump brought the idea of acquiring Greenland back into public discussion. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD“Excited to be in Greenland for the annual Joint Committee meeting between the US and Greenland with Denmark,” the US embassy said Monday on Instagram, posting a photo of Howery with Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt. The Joint Committee and Permanent Committee, which rotate meetings between Greenland and the United States, serve as platforms for both civilian and military collaboration, including discussions related to the US military presence on the strategically important island, Greenland’s government said on Saturday. According to Washington, Greenland — a territory under Danish sovereignty — plays a crucial role in US security and its ballistic missile early-warning system, as the island lies along the shortest route between Europe and North America.“Trust and respect are the foundation of any partnership, and it is no secret that the past year has been challenging,” Motzfeldt added. Denmark’s foreign ministry declined to say who would represent Denmark in the meetings.
