The strike did not only remove the supreme leader at the apex of Iran’s hierarchy; it also eliminated multiple senior commanders at the heart of the country’s security apparatus. Iran’s system of governance is structured around the office of the supreme leader, which stands above the presidency, parliament and judiciary.
